Finally !! The day had come !! The 1st day or debut day to become backpackers and we arrived here in Bangkok at Don Mueang International Airport at evening after took 2 hours Air Asia flight from Polonia International Aiport, Medan. With only brings 3000 THB and accompanied by my 2 friends (ES & TK) to survive in Thailand for 4 days before entering Malaysia and Singapore, we prepared to explore Thailand !! Sawasdee !!
Don Mueang International Airport
After 2 hours flight from Polonia Airport, we arrived at Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok. I had window seat in this flight, so I could enjoyed the aerial view of Bangkok with rice paddy field and Chao Phraya river from the sky. The weather was clear too at this day.
Back to our journey, the immigraton queue was bit long, and I had been told to revised my arrival card from the officer since I did not write the address about my staying place in Thailand. The officer was bit unfriendly, it was ok, since it was fault, and after revised it, I had already passed through the immigration and got my Bangkok stamp in my passport !! Yeeaah !
Now, let’s talk a bit about the airport. Don Mueang International Airport was 1 of 2 international airports serving Bangkok, the other one being Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Don Mueang also considered to be one of world’s oldest international airports and Asia’s oldest operating airport. It was officially opened in 1914, and the first commercial flight began in 1924 until 2006 when it was closed down following the opening of Suvarnahbhumi Internationl Airport. But, it was reopened again as low cost carrier airport and serving the flight for Nok Air, Air Asia, Lion Air, and Orient Thai Airlines.
Now, back to us, following our itinerary, that we need to travel to Phuket by overnight bus at tomorrow and we afraid that the ticket had been sold off, so we directly go to Sai Tai Mai (Southern Bus Terminal) first from Don Mueang. Since Southern Bus Terminal and Don Mueang was not linked with public transportation, it would more convenient for us to go by taxi. The taxi that we recommend to use in Bangkok was the “pink” one.
Sai Tai Mai (Southern Bus Terminal)
Actually, there are 3 bus terminal in Bangkok. The first one was Mo Chit / Northern Bus Terminal, the another one was Ekamai / Eastern Bus Terminal, and the last one was Sai Tai Mai / Southern Bus Terminal. Since, we were travelling to South Thailand, we need to buy a bus ticket in Sai Tai Mai.
After “enjoyed” the famous traffic jammed in Bangkok, we arrived at Sai Tai Mai after 1 hour from the airport. At first, in my mind, the terminal would be small and dirty places, but it would completely different when I entered the terminal building. It was very large, and had shopping mall inside the building. And I was completely got lost to find bus ticket booth. Fortunately, after following the direction, we found the ticket booth and booked 3 Overnight Bus Ticket to Phuket for tommorrow.
At last, we already arrived at our checkpoint for this day in Khao San Road area. We were staying at Rambuttri House in Rambuttri Road. The hotel was cheap and located at the famous location in Khao San Road which it was very lively in night. The hotel facility was in standard for a hostel or cheap hotel (you couldn’s ask too much from its cheap price). We booked a triple room, and it the room was not too small, so it was still comfortable for us. Also, we could easily explore the the street food in Khao San Road from here.
So, for overall, we would recommended for you to stay in Rambuttri House if you want to stay in Khao San Road area since it was clean, cheap, safe, and comfortable.
Khao San Road
This 410 meters Khao San Road was very famous for backpackers and budget travellers since it had chepest accomodation and travel deals at here. The street itself and the surrounding area feature numerous restaurant, bars, hotels, shops and entertainment, especially during the night when the entire neighborhood comes alive. It represents the most concentrated tourist area in Thailand, and has something to offer to everyone from t-shirt, to street food, to beer and performers.
We were really enjoyed the street food at here, but not the extreme one. Yeah, there would be extreme food like cockcroach, scorpions, worm, that costs you more expensive than normal food. Even, you would be taken a money from the dealer if you only took the photo of his stand.
So, after enjoying the street food in Khao San Road as my dinner, and had some walking tour in Khao San & Rambuttri Road, we went back to Rambuttri House, and called the day off.
