At early morning, we already prepared to check – out from Rambuttri House after ate simple breakfast in 7 Eleven. We would explore Bangkok as much as possible in very limited time before departs to Phuket at evening. So, we quickly went to our 1st destination for today, the Grand Palace.
From its name, we should know it was an official residence place where the King of Thailand resides. It was since 1782, but the King had moved to Dusit Palace since 1925. But, Grand Palace was still occasionally used for official events, and several royal ceremonies. Now, the Grand Palace had became the most popular tourist attraction that you should never missed in Bangkok.
It was a little difficult to find Grand Palace by walking from Khao San Road. We only follow the map that was pictured in our itinerary book and need very hard time to find it. Here is the walking direction from Google Maps to try guide you from Khao San Road :
As you walking to Grand Palace, beware of the people that would try to scam you, especially when you reach Sanam Luang Park, a large park before you reach Grand Palace. Just ignore them and you would see the white wall and follow people entering the gate, and it was Grand Palace. About detail of the scam, I would talk about it later at “diary.”
It was bit pricy for the ticket, it would cost you 500 THB to enter Temple of Emerald Buddha and Grand Palace complex, but it had already included the entry ticket ot Vinmasek Mansion that located in the other place. Maybe, at next time I would explore Vinmasek Mansion.
There would also a dress code to enter The Grand Palace. So, dress properly before entering this place. It was very large complex and had so many temple. 2 – 3 hours was already enough to visit this place. Oh yeah, use the umbrella, hat, or sun block, since it was very very hot at here !!
Actually, there are still so many beautiful places to visit in Rattanakosin Island, such as Wat Pho, Wat Arun, and National Museum. I had listed Wat Pho in my itinerary, but the bad weather came after we just went out from Grand Palace that made us to skip it and directly go to next destination.
MBK (Ma Boon Khrong) – Siam Shopping Complex
After done explore the Grand Palace, we continue our journey into Siam, a shopping centre in Bangkok that had so many department store and mall. It had MBK, Siam Centre, Siam Paragon, Siam Discovery, Platinum, Central, and many others. Since, we had limited time, we only explore MBK, and 3 Siam Shopping Mall that were connected by a bridge.
How to go to Siam Shopping Complex from Grand Palace :
- From Grand Palace, walk into Tha Thien Pier from Grand Palace.
- From Tha Thien Pier, use the taxi boat with Orange / Blue / No Flag color, and stopped at Central (Thaksin Pier).
- From Thaksin Pier, walked into BTS Saphan Taksin.
- From BTS Saphan Taksin, use BTS Silom Line (National Museum) and stopped at BTS Siam.
- From BTS Siam, just take any bridge by following the direction which shopping mall that you want to visit first.
My favourite shopping mall at Bangkok was MBK. It had 8 levels and was one of the largest shopping mall in Southeast Asia. We took a lunch at its foodcourt at level 6, and it was cheap that had so many variety choice of food. At here, the goods that was sold at here still at our reachable budget, so we spend most of our time at here.
The next one that was was connected directly from MBK was Siam Discovery. It was famous from its Madame Tussauds that was located at 6th floor inside this mall. The other one was Siam Centre, but there not so many things to explore at here, since it was small, and it was just became the bridge between Siam Discovery and Siam Paragon.
Siam Paragon was a mall that had so many branded goods and it was more high class than MBK. Of course, it was more expensive at here. But, you may visit to Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World aquarium at here, if you did not want to do shopping at Siam Paragon.
Sai Tai Mai (Southern Bus Terminal)
Done exploring some shopping mall in Siam, it was already evening. So, we need to go to Sai Tai Mai quickly to catch our bus that go to Phuket. We used a taxi at here since there are limited public transporatation that could reach Sai Tai Mai. Some drama at here when we took blue color taxi, the driver did not want to turn on its metre, so we were dumped by him after eagerly asked him to turn on. Fortunately, 5 minutes after being dumped, we found vacant pink taxi, and the next hour we already sitting comfortably inside our bus.
It was very long trip, about 14 hours road trip. We departed at 7 p.m and the bus stopped at resting place for 30 minutes at midnight go give us a chance to go to toilet, and had some meal if you were hungry. The resting place was still crowded at midnight, and had so many store at here. The Thailand tourism board really aware about tourist that like to had backpackers trip by build a good resting place even at the midnight.
