Merlion Family ? Yeah, Merlion !! It was the most famous landmark, symbol, and icon in Singapore. But, you should know that there were not only 1 Merlion in Singapore, it had 7 Merlions that was spread widely in Singapore. There were located at Merlion Park, Sentosa Island, Mountain Faber, and lastly at Ang Mo Kio. Until now, I only got chance to find 2 Merlions and 1 Mini Merlion, since it was located at the tourist spot, and you would easily found them, even it was your 1st time in Singapore. So ? Let’s introduce them !
Mr. Merlion (Sentosa Island)
The first one was “Mr. Merlion” that was located in Sentosa Island. Why am I called it Mr. Merlion ??? It was easy, it was the biggest Merlion that you could found in Singapore. It had 37 metres tall and since Sentosa Island was the most famous resort in Singapore, Mr. Merlion came here to work and collected money from tourist to support his family.
Mrs. Merlion (Merlion Park)
If you type “Singapore” at Google, you would found a Merlion that keep pouring the water. That place was called Merlion Park. And the Merlion statue at here was “Mrs. Merlion” Why ? Because she had her child on her behind, and always pouring the water which give a blessing for tourist as “thank you” token that already came to Singapore and supporting their Merlion family. This Mrs. Merlion statue had 8.6 metres tall and had already became the symbol and landmark of Singapore.
Merlion Jr (Merlion Park)
And the last Merlion was the Mini – Merlion. It was in mini size (but still taller than me), and had smiling face, so it was Mr Merlion and Mrs Merlion child, so I could called it “Merlion Jr”
Merlion, Symbol of Singapore
So ? We had knew the short story of Merlion Family, so what is a Merlion ? Merlion, was actually a “sea-lion”, a mythical creature with a lion’s head and a body of fish. The fish body represents Singapore’s origin as fishing village which we knew as Temasek, which means “sea town” in Javanese. The lion head also represent Singapore original name “Singapura” which means “Kota Singa”
That was all about the Merlion that I knew until know. So, let’s traveling to Singapore to meet up with Merlion Family ! Bon voyage !!
